Dr. Charity Kates is a board-certified Physician in Family Medicine who has also received certification in Functional Medicine by the Institute of Functional Medicine. Dr. Kates began her education in the Honors Program at High Point University where she earned her Bachelor’s degree. She went on to obtain her medical degree from the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Family Medicine at Northeast/Atrium Health System in Concord, NC.

Dr. Kates demonstrated interest in root cause medicine in many forms throughout her education and career. Starting in medical school when she participated in the Complementary and Alternative Medical Program (CAM), where she had the opportunity to shadow and learn from Integrative Medicine Practitioners. 

During her residency, she completed a rotation at an integrative medicine physician’s office, where she gained additional knowledge of Integrative practices. This exposure and her continued desire to expand her knowledge on holistic medical care led her to later pursue and receive her certification in functional medicine. 

Previously, she was employed by Novant Health as a Medical Director for an outpatient family medicine office.  During her career, she was also a Physician for Atrium Healthcare, Parsley Healthcare, and WellcomeMD. She has been recognized by the National Committee on Quality Assurance for both Patient Centered Medical Home Level 3 certification and for Diabetes Management. 

Dr. Kates’ focus includes some of the basic tenets of functional medicine including gut health, stress management, hormone, and adrenal regulation. She enjoys working collaboratively with her patients to help them reach their optimal health.
